10 Items or Less

Charlotte and I watched a Morgan Freeman movie the other night.  It didn't get a lot of play when it came out in 2006 and there's a reason.  Despite the decent cast (Jonah Hill, Paz Vega and cameos by Danny Devito and Rhea Pearlman) it doesn't really tell much of a story.

It's one of those slice-of-life independent films that tries to convince you it's important.  It's not.  But, it did leave me with a nagging question: what I would put on my 10 Items or Less list?

I'm not talking "Bucket" list here (you know the one where you're supposed to list ALL the things you want to do before you kick the...you get the idea).  No, this list is different.

The 10 Items List is the list of things you'd grab quickly in the Super Target of life.  It got me thinking about my list.  Maybe it'll make you think about yours.

Give me a plate of Tex-Mex enchiladas or chicken fried steak and I'm good to go.

Don't brand me a heathen because you don't see the Bible on my checkout counter.  It's there, along with good health and a long life.  I'm thinking things that are a little less philosophical.  Here's my list in no particular order:

Bob's 10 Items or Less

Food

Wine

Friends

Loved ones

Cool weather

Travel

Movies

Books

Music

Humor

Food

Gotta have it.  Give me a plate of Tex-Mex enciladas or chicken fried steak and I'm good to go.

Wine

What's food without wine?  I'll take a nice dry Napa Valley cabernet if you please.

Friends

The perfect pairing to good food and wine are some great friends.  Come on over.

Loved Ones

Hey, if you weren't loved, you wouldn't be going across the scanner.  You know who you are.

Cool Weather

I'll admit it's a little esoteric, but I've lived in Texas too long not to appreciate it.

Travel

Getting out is the best way to appreciate what you've got at home.  I recommend it.

Movies

Don't ask me to make a Top 10 List of my favorites.  Just let me take some with me.

Books

Remember when you discovered John Kennedy O'Toole, Kurt Vonnegut or H. Allen Smith?  I sure do.  Scan 'em Dano!

Music

If I can't take Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Elvis Costello, I'm going to another register.

Humor

If the rules change to 1 Item or Less, I'd push everything to the side and take this one.  It's what makes the other stuff worthwhile.

What's on your list?

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
