Mass murder, betrayal and intense desires take center stage in the two latest romantic rides from Boomer Brief fav suspense-tress Brenda Novak: Body Heat (August 2010) and Killer Heat (September 2010). Set in southeastern Arizona, both torrid titles focus on female investigators who must reconcile painful reminders from their pasts in order to protect others.

Body Heat-350.jpgBody Heat

Chief of police Sophia St. Claire enters a nightmare when 12 undocumented aliens (UDAs) are gunned down, execution-style, in the desert near her small town after coming into the country illegally. New to her job, the 30-year-old, cheerleader-turned-cop finds she needs reinforcements, fast.

She could join forces with Roderick Guerrero, a private security operative from LA-based Department 6. The bastard, half-breed son of a wealthy local rancher, Rod has reluctantly returned to Bordertown on a mission to stop the UDA killings. His mother was an illegal alien and he owes it to her and her people to find the killer.

But before they can team up, Sophia will have to show the former Navy SEAL whose boss (he won't argue with a taser gun) and work through a 15-year-old hurt that's still raw on both sides.

In this compelling read, Sophia puts her feelings, family and career on the line as she struggles to expose the murderer. Novak's gutsy heroine with the tattoo sleeve finds passion with a prisoner, interrogates her mother, and defies the city council during her search. At odds with her past, the girl who came close to joining the Hells Angels proves she'll do whatever it takes to bring justice to her town.

Private investigator Francesca Moretti's troubles start when she takes the police to a body she's found in a salvage yard close to Prescott only to have the "corpse" turn out to be a mannequin. This surprising twist is the first of many in the pages of Killer Heat, a fascinating novel sure to entertain you.

In this thriller, Francesca faces a menacing adversary who has added the woman she was hired to find to his string of brutal murders. The Yavapai County Sheriff's office has called in Department 6 special investigator Jonah Young to work the case after discovering the bodies of seven women in nearby Skull Valley.

To end the violence, Fran must set aside her emotions and collaborate with Jonah, a man she loved when they were in the police academy together 10 years ago. But that was before his drunken, one-night stand with her best friend Adrianna Covington set them all adrift, and Fran has never forgiven him. Novak's masterful flashbacks bring the romantic triangle to life, showing how passionately Fran and Jonah fell in love, why Jonah sabotaged the relationship and how Adrianna tends to look out for her own interests.

Tensions run high in this fast-paced tale of love, forgiveness and second chances as Francesca and Jonah unite to unmask the killer and stop the rash of grisly murders. Their suspects include a host of unsavory characters that'll keep you guessing whodunit until the very end.

Best-selling author Brenda Novak's at the top of her game here. Having done her homework, the settings and themes in her gripping Hired-Gun Trilogy (Body Heat, Killer Heat and White Heat - see Boomer Brief's August archives) are astonishingly realistic.

Although these books have a kindred spirit, their dramas stand alone. You can pick up any of them first, but you won't want to stop until you've read all three. Like a delectable box of chocolates or those movies on Lifetime (my guilty pleasure!), they're highly addictive.

You could win a Brenda Novak mini-tote packed with autographed copies of the Hired-Gun Trilogy (White Heat, Body Heat and Killer Heat) or one of four copies of her latest suspense-filled romance: Killer Heat.

To enter the contest, email your name and mailing address (no PO Boxes please) to Enter@BoomerBrief.com by Nov. 4 and put "I love the heat" in the subject line.

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
