For Your Eyes Only

By Charlotte on March 11, 2011 8:08 AM

Eye-164.jpgA trip to Stacy's Furniture in Grapevine last week lifted my spirts.

All it took to lighten my step was for Deanie, the bubbly, 30-something salesgirl helping me shop for office furniture, to notice my eyes ... in a good way.  She didn't mention how tired they looked (hard to avoid at 50+), the crow's feet that have a habit of jumping out at me from the mirror or  the countless other things I obsess over.

We've teamed up with Acuvue and Neutrogena to give one lucky boomer $250 in prizes, including some incredible new contact lenses and sun protection products. Read on for details. Contest ends March 24!

Keeping our eyes looking good can be a challenge for boomers. To pep up our peepers, Dr. Kim Castleberry, OD, of Plano Eye Associates recommends:

Focus on the Whites

Nothing says healthy more than bright, white eyes. But time, medications and contact lenses often cause bloodshot, wrinkled eyes that can say more about you than you want to reveal.  Technology advancements in eye health can give boomers back their pretty, sparkly white eyes.  Two to try:

·         Restasis - This prescription drop helps the eye produce the tears that time and medications have taken away. Ideal for tired-looking, bloodshot eyes, Restasis can restore whiteness and add sparkle.  Ask your eye doctor about this helpful medicine.  Using it can make your eyes look and feel years younger.

·         1•Day Acuvue TruEye Contact Lenses - These daily disposable contact lens are the first made from silicone hydrogel, a super breathable material with locked-in moisturizing agents.  That makes them the slipperiest contacts available.

Acuvue's new TruEye contacts can actually make your eyes whiter by releasing moisturizing agents and gliding smoothly over the eye. If dryness has forced you to shelf your contacts, these new lenses could be a solution.  They're also great news if you're experiencing dryness, irritation or redness with your current contacts.

In addition to lubricating your eyes, these contacts never need cleaninew box-200.jpgng. Simply throw them away at the end of the day for the best in vision, comfort and eye health.  They include advanced UV protection to help shield your peepers from harmful sunlight that can cause cataracts and macular degeneration.  Ask your eye doctor if 1•Day Acuvue TruEye lenses are right for you.

Consider a Lift

If wrinkled, drooping and bulging eyelids are making you look older than your years, an eyelid tuck can turn back the clock and improve your vision. Today's advanced procedures are often done on an outpatient basis at prices that may have you batting your baby blues sooner than you think. Ask your eye doctor to recommend a board-certified eye plastic surgeon for the optimum outcome.

You Gotta Wear Shades

It's important to protect your eyes from the sun's damaging rays.  Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness and sun wear is your first line of defense against this terrible eye disease. Wearing sunglasses, glasses or contacts with advanced UV protection and having yearly exams can improve your appearance while preserving your vision.

I don't know if eyes are window into the soul, but I do know that they are a window into your health and beauty.  Taking good care of your eyes now can help you enjoy a younger appearance and better vision for many years to come.

·         A one-month supply of 1•DAY Acuvue TruEye lenses*

·         Neutrogena Healthy Skin Brightening Eye Protector

1•DAY Acuvue TruEye offers patients the highest level of UV protection in a contact lens, blocking more than 96 percent of UV-A rays and 99 percent of UV-B rays that reach the lens.

To enter, just email your name and mailing address (no PO Boxes please) to Enter@BoomerBrief.com by March 24.

* Actual value of lenses depends on winner's prescription.  The winner will have to provide a current, valid contact lens prescription in order to redeem that portion of the prize.  Otherwise, it will be forfeited and no substitution provided.

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
