We're Kicking Off a New Column

By Bob on April 29, 2011 6:51 AM

Charlotte and I thought it would be fun to "brief" you on the Boomer brothers and sisters who frequent the site. So, we've decided to create a new column called "Catching Up With..." that pulls back the curtain on another Boomer every couple of weeks.

In this new column, we'll introduce you to Boomer Brief readers and show you what they're doing...how they spend their weekends...what's in their fridge...where they're going on their next trip...what they had for dinner last night...what's on their iPod and in their Netflix queue...fun stuff like that and a whole lot more.

I'm going to kick things off to show you what we have in mind, but what we really want is to hear from you. So, email us at enter@boomerbrief.com and put "Catching Up" in the subject line. We'll reply with a few fill-in-the-blank questions and take care of the rest. In a couple of weeks, we'll let you know when we're Catching Up With...YOU on The Brief.

You guys will be a whole lot more interesting than me, but here's an example of how the column works:

Catching Up With...Bob Hill

Bob is one of the brains (the small one) behind The Boomer Brief. When he's not writing snarky movie reviews or being chased by the neighborhood chupacabra he affectionately calls "Chuck," he's speaking at prostate cancer symposiums and promoting his book, Dead Men Don't Have Sex: A Guy's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer. We caught up with him starring out his office window in Colleyville, Texas.

What did you have for lunch today?Bob - 225.jpg
A pimento cheese sandwich and a piñata apple. Market Street in Colleyville makes this fresh pimento cheese that's better than any I've ever tried, so I occasionally treat myself. The piñata apple came from Central Market in Southlake, where they have more organic apples than you can imagine. It's a wonderful place for foodies - or anybody who likes really fresh fruits and vegetables.

Is Chuck the chupacabra still chasing you?
Not this week. I had to stop taking my morning two-mile walk through the neighborhood due to pollen. I'll have to hold off running from Chuck until the oak and pine pollen die down. If I go out now, I'd be too hoarse to scream if Chuck caught me.

What's on your DVR?
Modern Family, The Middle, Castle, Grey's Anatomy (Charlotte's fave), Private Practice (ditto), Parenthood, about a dozen episodes of Gary Shandling's The Larry Sanders Show and more House Hunter's International episodes than I'll ever watch.

Anything new on your iPod?
Yeah, I just downloaded If It Wasn't for Bad and Hey Ahab from Elton John and Leon Russell's new CD The Union. My friend Bob Walter turned me on this CD after seeing their concert in Fort Worth. I've also been downloading a lot of Astrud Gilberto
and Sergio Mendes - it may be the spring weather or the oak pollen - but for some reason I'm going through a Brazil phase right now.

Name three things in your fridge.
Sabra Chipotle Hummus, Babybel cheese and Viader Cabernet Sauvignon
(man does not live by hummus alone).

What are you reading now?
Where the Wind Blew by Bob Sommer. It's a Baby Boomer novel I'll be reviewing for The Boomer Brief. Mason Williams (remember Classical Gas?) loved it and so far, I'm in agreement with Mason.

What's your idea of the perfect vacation?
Sitting under an umbrella on the beach at Kiva Dunes in Gulf Shores, Alabama. If you can't relax there, then there's something seriously wrong with you.

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
