So it's not surprising to learn that Boomers are carrying the make-love-not-war torch all the way to the finish line. But, what's interesting are the new studies showing the purported health benefits to an active sex life as we get older. Turns out there are some really good health reasons to heat up the bedroom. With that in mind, we asked Southlake physician Dr. Walter Gaman to give Boomers the 411 on why SEX after 50 is just what the Dr. ordered. Here's his Rx:
Top 3 Reasons Sex Is Important after Age 50
Walter Gaman, MD
Sexual activity plays an important role in overall health. While some believe that sex is for the younger generations, the University of Chicago researchers found that at age 55, most men still have another 15 years of a healthy sex life left. Actually, many men and women well into their 70s and 80s are enjoying intercourse. The benefits of sex go far beyond just the emotional connection:
#1: Sex Improves Heart Health
The research results are in and its good news. Contrary to popular belief, sex twice a week can actually reduce the risk of a fatal heart attack. Studies have shown that frequent sex improves circulation, lowers blood pressure and that the act of having sex has no association with stroke risk. So, next time you want to do something good for your heart, jump into bed with your partner.
#2: Sex Adds Years to Your Life
A British study found that having an active sex life can increase longevity. In the study, men having two or more orgasms a week had half the death rate of those that did only once a month. This finding may be linked to the actual chemistry changes that take place during intercourse when the DHEA and Human Growth Hormone (HGH) are released by the body. These hormones help repair cells and tissue and help maintain youth.
#3: Sex Puts a Smile on Your Face
There is no better way to lift your spirits then to have a little afternoon delight. During sex, the hormones that are released boost mood. Actually, studies show that these natural hormones are more effective in reducing anxiety and stress than prescription sedatives. Sex has also been proven to improve sleep quality and we all know that a good night's rest is the best precursor to a great day.
Age should never stop you from enjoying the benefits of sexual intercourse. If you are having problems with libido, don't blame it on your age, instead see your physician and find the cause. Many causes of low libido can be identified and corrected, so let your physician help you find your way back to an active and healthy sex life.
