Morning Glory

By Bob on August 18, 2011 1:48 AM

Morning Glory is a new breed of comedy. If you're thinking, "Hey Bob, romantic comedy is NOT a new breed of comedy." I'd smile politely and tell you that regardless of what you've seen or heard, Morning Glory is NOT a romantic comedy. Instead, it's the newest romcom hybrid that I call Curmcom (shorthand for Curmudgeon comedy).

That's not necessarily a bad thing - especially when you've got a curmudgeon like Harrison Ford taking the lead. I know, the trailer for Morning Glory makes you THINK it's all about cute Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) assuming the Mary Tyler Moore role as overworked, underpaid TV producer. In reality it's two coming of age tales - perky producer Becky (Rachel McAdams) learns about (TV) life from crotchety veteran TV journalist Mike (Harrison Ford). Comedy ensues.

If you're thinking you've been down this road before, it's only because YOU HAVE. Mary Tyler Moore Becky gets the producer job at the last-place TV morning show and is challenged by bad on-air talent, no production budget and a staff who doesn't give a s***. Director Roger Michell (Notting Hill) knows his way around the genre and he does a nice job of bringing out the inner goofiness and pettiness of the talk show anchors (Diane Keaton's co-anchor Colleen is a delight).

Mary Tyler Moore's Becky's bright idea to save the beleaguered morning show is to coax curmudgeon Mike out of semi-retirement and on to the anchor desk. It's not a plot spoiler (hey guys, it's in the trailer) to say she's successful in getting this warhorse to water. The question for the remainder of the movie, is can she make him drink? Or at least, can she save her job.

The rest is purely predictable. In the brave new world of the curmcom, there are at least a few things you can rely on: 1) Wise old bastard will dispense worldly wisdom to America's youth and 2) The female lead will flash enough skin to earn a PG-13. Done. And done.

Morning Glory shines brightest when McAdams and Ford are on the screen. With these talented actors at the helm, it sparkles just enough to blind you from the fact that you've seen it all before.

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
