Show Your Soft Side

By Charlotte on October 7, 2011 6:53 AM

It may be fall but Texas temperatures are still topping out in the 80s. That means, Bob's wearing shorts while I prepare for the sweater weather that's around the corner. I've been making Pumpkin Bars, scheduling flu shots, and rounding up cardigans and scarves (don't you just love layering!).

The annual cool-down certainly will be a welcome relief after one of our hottest summers on record. Too bad the cold, wind and constant hand-washing autumn brings can do a number on your skin. Wouldn't it be nice to face fall without uncomfortable dryness,sidebar_curelcontact 200.jpg flaking and itching?

The folks at Curél are offering Baby Boomers the chance to do just that. They've joined us to giveaway three trios of some of their top skin softeners:

  • New Curél Itch Defense Lotion
  • Curél Ultra Healing Lotion
  • Curél Hand and Cuticle Therapy Cream

Formulated with ceramides, these dermatologist-tested hydrators deliver moisture where skin needs it most.

Itch Defense 142.jpgNew Curél Itch Defense Lotion

Think instant itch relief for dry skin. Designed to restore skin's natural moisture levels, this dermatologist- and allergist-tested formula rebalances four essential components of healthy skin:

  • Humectants and emollients boost moisture and leave skin feeling protected
  • Natural ceramides restore skin's barrier function and regulate skin's ability to hold moisture
  • Accelerated cellular turnover minimizes dryness and flaking
  • Balanced pH levels return skin to a healthy equilibrium

Gentle enough for babies six months and up, Curél Itch Defense Lotion includes Panthenol to reduce irritation and redness. Antioxidant-rich olive oil encourages moisture retention and soothes eczema-prone areas while Shea Butter helps calm and soften skin.

Besides delivering instant relief, regular use of this fragrance-free lotion helps keep irritation from coming back. That's great news for Boomers like me, whose skin is both dry and sensitive. This powerful formUltra Healing 142.jpgula works best when used immediately after showering or bathing. Bonus: It absorbs quickly so you can put it on shortly before dressing without fear of it sticking to your clothes. ($7.99 for 13 fluid ounces)

Curél Ultra Healing Lotion

You'd never step outside in cold weather without the protection of a coat--why leave home without protecting your skin? Curél Ultra Healing Lotion helps strengthen skin's natural barrier to shield it from the harsh effects of cold and wind.

Made with Curél's proprietary Ceramide Complex, this moisturizer replenishes skin's essential protection mechanism--ceramides--to lock moisture in and keep irritants out.

Developed for extremely dry skin, the healing formula provides 24-hour protection and is gentle enough to use on your face. It leaves skin feeling silky smooth, never greasy. Plus, it won't clog pores. ($7.99 for 13 fluid ounces)

Curél Hand and Cuticle Therapy Cream

Rated the top hand cream in Shape Magazine's 8th annual beauty awards (see the September issue for other winners), Curél Hand & Cuticle Therapy Cream soothes even the driest hands on contact. Rich in soy milk, monoi oil and vitamin E, this unique formula locks in moisture so skin stays hydrated longer. The bond's so strong, in fact, that it keeps on working through several hand washings.

I normally shy away from hand lotions because I hate anything that makes my hands slick. But this one is different. It absorbs so quickly there's no fear of slipping and sliding. The non-greasy lotion has helped both me and Bob, who's really enjoyed the break from battling his cracked, chapped skin. ($6 for 3.5 fluid ounces)

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
