Putting Your Best Face Forward

By Charlotte on January 4, 2012 4:30 PM

I may not be a superhero but I do have a special power. More and more often lately, I become invisible.

Stacey Schieffelin Headshot 350.jpgAlthough useful for making quick getaways, this "power" can be quite frustrating when I'm trying to deposit hard-earned dollars the old-fashioned way at Wells Fargo or buy that even-cuter-because-it's-half-price sweater at Banana and no one seems to see me. Make the person behind the counter male and put a flashy blonde to my right and I might as well not exist.

That's why I was thrilled to get some notice-me beauty secrets from former Ford model, makeup guru and Baby Boomer Stacey Schieffelin, founder and president of ybf (your best friend) clothing and makeup. Stacey believes putting your best face forward is a mark of self-respect, not vanity. And she shared some of her tricks to help us Boomers look and feel our best every day.

Putting Your Best Face Forward

By Stacey Schieffelin

Hello BeYOUtiful Boomers! There may be no stopping Father Time or Mother Nature but we all have the ability to grow older gracefully. So if you can't beat 'em, join 'em by embracing all the beYOUtiful stages of your amazing life's journey - each one as unique and fabulous as YOU are!

Here are a few of my favorite ybf (your best friend) tips and trade secrets that will help you find your personal path to beYOUty and self confidence.

2_image001 este 83.jpgBegin Beneath, BeYOUtiful

Although everyone sees your beautiful face on the surface, it's what's underneath that really makes everything work. Layers upon layers of skin cells are constantly turning over and it's up to us to "take care and repair" what lies beneath. This maintenance will help nourish and create a beYOUtiful, glowing surface!

Years of UVA, UVB and environmental aggressors can really do a number on valuable skin cells. Use a high-quality, antioxidant-rich serum on clean skin at night to help repair and restore skin's natural essence. In the winter months, I love Estee Lauders' Advance Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex. Inspired by groundbreaking DNA research, this high-performance, anti-aging serum can dramatically reduce the visible signs of aging. Use it every day to help repair the appearance of past damage, prevent future damage and deliver much-needed moisture. ($52 - $130 at Esteelauder.com)

Hydration's Where It's Happening

As we go through life, our skin tends to lose its natural moisture and elasticity. But dry 3_image002 67 eliz.jpgskin is no fun! Besides highlighting fine lines, crinkles and wrinkles, it can make our complexion seem dull, itchy and uncomfortable. We need hydration to nourish our skin and keep it youthful and luminous. Hydration also helps plump cells as it advances their turnover, leaving skin bright and healthy looking.

Use a moisture-rich cream cleanser to wash your face in the morning and at night. Adding one to your skincare regime can give you a gleaming, glowing radiance that you won't want to live without. I like Elizabeth Arden's luxurious, vitamin-packed Ceramide Purifying Cream Cleanser. ($27.50 at Hsn.com)

4_image003 72 ybf p.jpgIt's PRIME Time, Girlfriend!

You'll look much younger than your age if you begin by prepping your sweet face. While most women skip this step, an artist certainly primes her blank canvas and gets rid of knicks and knacks before creating a work of art.

Applying a primer to skin before using foundation will fill in fine lines and deep pores, even out texture and help your makeup last longer. Look for one with a yellow base that will help neutralize skin tones as it smoothes the surface like ybf Perfect Prep Face Primer. ($27.50 at Hsn.com)

5_image004 117 cg.jpgLove the Skin You're In

A caked on mask of makeup is a surefire way to appear a bit "ahead of your time" - and who needs help looking older! Take care when selecting foundation because the shade, texture and weight can clash with your skin if you don't get it right. Think less-is-more, love the skin you're in and use foundation sparingly. Choose a liquid base that lets you build your coverage - from sheer to full-on depending on your needs. Try Covergirl and Olay Simply Ageless Foundation because it's been shown to significantly improve skin's condition and reduce signs of aging in as little as four weeks. ($13.99 at Covergirl.com)

Take a Brow

Sad but true ... as we age, our eyebrows become thin, sparse and sometimes even disappear. Color fades and can go to white or grey. But don't despair. By using a natural or universal-6_image005 216 brow.jpgshaded pencil, you can give your brows their former definition. In some cases, a well-groomed eyebrow can have the same impact as a surgical eye lift!

With the ybf Universal Eyebrow Pencil, you don't even have to decide on a color. It changes to up to 22 different shades depending on the amount of pressure you use during application. It's great for all skin tones and hair colors - no matter what the season. (2 for $20 at ybfstacey.com)

7_image006 90 lf.jpgPerfect Your Pout

Our lips laugh, kiss and speak the truth. They have a lot to say about how we feel and how sensational we are so line 'em and define 'em, kitten.

We communicate with our precious pout and nothing is more distracting than jagged, migrating lip color. Since aging sometimes makes our lips appear paler and thinner, use a soft, long-lasting liner to help color stay put. Liner can also help your lips appear fuller and more hydrated. I like FusionBeauty XL Plumping Primer Pencil and Color Shine Gloss in Flirt. It gives lips just the right amount of exaggeration as it naturally lines, primes and shines. (Pencil and Gloss $38.00 at Hsn.com)

Easy on the Eyes

Your eyes are the windows to your soul, your attitude and your age. If your lashes seem thinner and lighter than they were in your youth, you aren't alone.

To revive your pretty peepers, line your lower lash area with a soft pencil or powder shadow. No need for too much, as you don't want to close up your beautiful eyes but rather define them. This will help give yo8_image007.jpgu the appearance of full, voluptuous, youthful lashes again. Try Lancôme's Le Crayon Khol Eyeliner Pencil - it goes on smooth and is long lasting. ($24.50 at Lancome-usa.com)

Know When to Shine

Although we've earned every one of those little tale-tell signs of wisdom, there's no need to show them off. But shimmering shades tend to sit on top of our littl9_image008 131 s.jpge crinkles, accentuating fine lines.

High-shimmer shadows draw attention to your eyelids; not your AMAZING eyes! That's why it's best to limit glimmer shadows, confining them to the inner corners, the centers of the lids and just beneath the brows on the brow bones. There they can add a little pop of highlighting. You will see the difference, glamour girl!

Try a natural-hued eye shadow palette like Shiseido's Luminizing Satin Eye Color Trio in Strata. The satin finish adds just enough light-diffusing pigments and the versatile, earthy shades enhance your natural beauty. ($33 at Hsn.com)

With these eight simple steps, you can put your best face forward. In no time, they'll have you looking and feeling like your most awesome, well-rested self afloat in your very own fountain of youth.

Diabetes-Friendly Chicken Burrito Bowl

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
