The Sitter

By Bob on August 30, 2012 4:43 AM

The Sitter is one of those movies that try ever-so-mightily to be funny in a Hangover sort of way. It's got plenty of wacky characters, an unbelievable premise and a fish-out-of-water plot. What could possibly go wrong?

Plenty. Meet Noah (Jonah Hill, Moneyball) a bicycle-pedaling suburban slacker with too much time on his hands. He gets drafted into babysitting so his divorced mom can go on a double-date with the kids' parents. Noah's really a good guy in a slacker sort of way, so he's ready to help out his dating-challenged mother.

All's well at the babysitting gig until the parents leave. Then, SURPRISE all HELL breaks loose. The kids are straight from Central Casting: an anxiety-wracked,13-year-old boy; a 10-year-old Nicaraguan boy who's an adoptee with anger-management issues and an 8-year-old girl who exhibits more age inappropriate behaviors than you can count. YeeeeeeHaw!

As the parental units clear the driveway, the house is reduced to rubble just as Noah's coke-freak girlfriend drops a booty call on him. "If you'll bring me some coke, we'll have sex," she says. Before you can say EVERBODY INTO THE MINIVAN, the brooding brood is buckled in and ready for a night of adventure.

First stop on their misguided mystery tour is the neighborhood coke dealer. He's a friendly psycho (Sam Rockwell) with a penchant for Faberge-filled coke eggs and firearms. From here, the plot spins wildly out of control as Noah and his charges deal with drug dealers, stolen cars, a horny girlfriend, an estranged father, sexual identity issues, the police and the kid's parents.

Confused? Don't worry, none of this is on the final. It's a mess. But there are times it's a very funny, verrrrry raunchy mess. Director David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) knows his way around this action/comedy genre but there's only so much he can do with the script. It cruises to its all-too-familiar ending in 81 minutes.

The Sitter is a one-joke movie that begs you to believe that a minivan full of kids can outsmart, outshoot and outrun marauding drug dealers and still make it home in time to catch the late news. If you're buying that premise, then see this movie - or at the very least, leave your email address in the Comments Section so I can tell you about this bridge I have for sale in Brooklyn.

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
