Catching Up With...Michael Gitter

By Bob on January 25, 2013 4:33 AM

Michael Gitter is a Boomer with a gift for nostalgia and getting things done. He's using his entrepreneurial skills to tap into the collective consciousness of pop culture with a new website you'll be talking about soon.

Always on the move, this New Yorker is a tough Boomer to nail down because he's traveling or working. I could go on, but I think it's better if I just let him tell you...like he told me when we finally caught up with him.

What are you doing these days?

My business partner Richard Bronson and I are starting a website, DoYouRemember.comfor posting and sharing memories. Unlike most other sites, we're launching with a unique chat room feature where the site will search the internet for what you are chatting about. This feature will allow visitors to interact with others, while seeing images and videos which they can use to build and share their own memories.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

David Arquette. He's funny, self-deprecating, a little snarky, creative and quirky, and I am told we look a lot alike.

Where is your favorite vacation?

I summer in Mykonos and stay at this great hotel called The Belvedere. My favorite restaurant in the world is there. It's an open-air shack overlooking the Aegean Sea called Kiki's. If I'm ever in a bad mood, I look at photos from Kiki's and I snap out of it. Over the years the group of friends who go to Mykonos has grown, and we number in the 100's now. Mykonos is an island in Greece with stunning beaches and the most amazing colors.

Kiki's doesn't have electricity or take reservations. All hot food is cooked on the grill - Fresh octopus, steak, pork chops, chicken, etc. Only thing that surpasses the food is the setting.  Kiki's is basically an outdoor terrace, overlooking the sea, covered by the shade of a tree that grows out of the middle of the floor. It is my favorite restaurant in the world.

Peanut butter: Crunchy or smooth?

Crunchy. Easily.

Favorite adult beverage?

Johnny Walker Blue Label. Easy.

Favorite meal?

I am a comfort food guy. Meatloaf and mashed potatoes, fish sticks...a good burger from Jackson Hole Hamburger restaurant or JG Melon's on the Upper East Side, NYC. And I cannot forget a steak at Peter Luger's. Start off with their delicious onion rolls, and an appetizer of chopped tomato and onion with shrimp and order a few slices of slab bacon. Next, the only thing you need to know is that you are going to order their porterhouse steak, home fries, creamed spinach, fantastic rolls and steak sauce. Here's an insider's tip: Don't order a steak for each person. If you are 4 people, you can get away with a steak for 3 and still have some left over!

JG Melon is a cash-only burger joint that's a NYC institution. Not a particularly big burger and a very small restaurant, but totally yummy and definitely worth the wait.

Jackson Hole has the most amazing burger in NY. I have eaten there for 30+ years and have only had one thing: The Balduni Burger. I don't even look at the menu. This giant piece of chopped meat, covered in onions, mushrooms and American cheese, served with a helping of sliced half-sour pickles, and great fries and onion rings!

Last concert you attended?

Jay-Z at the opening night of the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn. It was opening night for the place and Jay-Z is a part owner of the Nets basketball team that plays there.

Last time you read a "real" hold-it-in-your-hands newspaper?

This morning! I still subscribe to the NY Post and the NY Times on weekends. There is still nothing better than getting the Sunday NY Times delivered.

What's the one electronic gadget you could not live without?

My pacemaker (kidding!). My iPhone.

Favorite iPhone App.?

Bluupit. (I'm partial because Bluupit is our product). It's a silly app which allows you to send video clips by Message through your phone. Do You Remember "Plop Plop, Fizz-Fizz"? You can find and send it there.
