Netflix' new original series, Orange is the New Black, returns June 6 for another 13 episodes. The edgy drama features brief nudity, language and adult situations. If these things bother you, then I'd stick to Inuit Pawn Stars on The History Channel or House Hunters Intergalactic on HGTV.
Orange is the story of Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a woman in her thirties who's sentenced to 15 months in prison after being convicted of a decade-old crime of transporting money for her drug dealing girlfriend (Laura Prepon, That 70's Show). It's based on a true story written by ex-con Piper Kerman and directed by Weeds' Jenji Kohan.
Season 2 Trailer
I recently listened to Kerman's book on the way to the beach. Like most novels serialized for television there are differences (some major; some, well, remain to be seen).
But even now that I know how it ends (or rather how the BOOK ends) it's still an engaging storyline with well-drawn characters. The plot is a classic "heroic journey" with Piper entering as scarred civilian and (no spoiler) exiting as a hardened convict.
All 13 episodes of Season 1 are available on Netflix if you'd like to binge-watch in preparation for Season 2. After the cliff-hanger that ended Season 1, I know I'll be watching.
