Avoid These 4 Tech Traps

By Bob on October 27, 2014 2:24 AM

You don't have to be a technophobe to be tripped up by high-tech traps. The tech world is filled with scams that can cost you money, steal your identity or put you and your loved ones at risk.

4 Tech Traps to Avoid

1. Unsafe gadgets for kids & grandkids

Tablets, smartphones, e-readers and gaming consoles are always great gifts. But, if you aren't careful those devices can accidentally load up a video, website or book that isn't age appropriate. Before you give any gadget to a child, take it out of the packaging in advance and make sure you know how it works and set parental controls.

2. Unsecured Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi worries abound especially when you're out and about. If you're traveling, beware of the free Wi-Fi available in the hotel, restaurants or airport. You never know who is on the network with you. Avoid websites like your bank until you get on a secure, private network.

3. Going phishing

Like most of America you've embraced the idea of ordering online. But wait a minute, you have an email from USPS, FedEx, UPS, DHL or another carrier saying your shipment is delayed! Arrrggghhh! If the email includes an attachment or link, and you open either, you really will be derailed.

The email is a scam that will download a virus to your computer. A real shipping email will give you a tracking number and direct you to the shipper's website for more information. Don't be fooled by this all-to-frequent trick.

Extended-warranties-515.jpg4. Extended warranties

Extended warranties are almost always a money-loser. Most high-tech gadgets either break within the free factory warranty period or after the extended warranty expires. Instead of an extended warranty, check with your credit card company. Credit cards like American Express automatically extend the factory warranty on things you buy.

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
