3 Terrific Apps for Holiday Photos

By Bob on December 5, 2014 9:52 AM

Between now and New Year's we'll all be taking a lot of photos. Our NY son, Cole, has grudgingly come around to the idea that Charlotte will be snapping loads of pictures of him with his friends and relatives when he's in town. Hey, that's what you get for being an only child. Suck It Up.

Sure, I've got a fancy DSLR for vacation photos and the food and fashion photography you see on the site. But, for just about everything else, my iPhone is my go-to camera. That's the torture device Charlotte will be using to embarrass Cole during the holidays.

If your phone is your favorite digital camera, then you could use some great photo editing apps to make those cellphone pictures even better. These three are incredibly easy to use and they're FREE. You're welcome, America.

3 Terrific Apps for Holiday Photos

1. Adobe Photoshop Express (Free; Apple)

This abbreviated version of the Photoshop is designed with the amateur in mind. With this app, photo editing was never so fun, fast, and easy. You simply touch your way to better-looking iPhone pictures using slide bar adjustments, or let automatic one-touch fixes and filters do it for you. If you can finger paint, you can use this app with amazing results.

Plenty of photo apps come with digital frames that you can use to add a retro look to your cell phone photos. I added a "Polaroid" look to this picture I took in Brooklyn

You'll find the same professional controls offered in high end DSLR cameras with this app. It includes a stabilizer to help eliminate blurry photos, a self-timer for selfies and a digital zoom. Easy to use and very intuitive - what's not to like?

3. PicShop Lite (Free; Apple)

Download this app and you'll turn even bleh photos into beautiful photos. It has plenty of user-friendly editing options and dozens of filters. Your friends will be asking "How'd you do that?" Just smile and tell 'em you found it on The Boomer Brief.

I really like PicShop, because you can manipulate images and make ordinary photos extradordinary - like these photos I took at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
