4 Natural Cold and Flu Remedies

By Bob on February 11, 2015 4:15 AM

This has been one of the worse cold and flu seasons on record. There are plenty of over-the-counter medicines that alleviate the symptoms, but there are several drug-free alternatives that work surprisingly well.

If you're suffering the effects of a cold or the flu, here are four easy-to-use remedies that might make you feel better.

4 Natural Cold and Flu Remedies

 Chicken Soup-565.jpg

1. Chicken Soup

Your Nana was right - chicken soup really is good for you. Sipping the soothing fluid can help avoid dehydration and just inhaling the steam can ease congestion. Some research has shown that chicken soup has anti-inflammatory properties, but these are lab studies and it's unclear whether this effect works with real-world colds.

Fever-600.jpg2. Let Your Fever Work

Think that low-grade fever is doing you harm? It may be doing you some good. The rise in temperature makes your body inhospitable for germs and actively fights colds and flu. But don't be a martyr - stay hydrated and if it's making you too uncomfortable take something to reduce it.

Nasal Strips-600.jpg

3. Nasal Strips

Charlotte and I are big believers in nasal strips for night time congestion. Manufacturers like Breathe Right have several products to open the nasal passages. They won't unclog your nose, but they do create more space for airflow.

Zinc Natural Cold & Flu Remedy-600.jpg4. Zinc

Zinc appears to have effects against the cold by preventing the virus from reproducing. It won't prevent colds, but some research suggests zinc may shorten the duration and the severity when taken within 24 hours of the first symptoms.

Why Weight? is a column on diet, nutrition and making better choices so you can live a longer healthier life. The authors are not doctors and nothing here should be taken as medical advice. Always consult your physician before making any changes in diet, exercise, nutrition or cell phone provider (Let's face it doctors are just really, really smart, they know a lot about a lot of stuff). Our goal is simple: We want all Baby Boomers to live long enough to get back the money they've paid into Social Security. Remember, your children's inheritance isn't going to spend itself. It's up to you.

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
