Mr. Selfridge

By Bob on September 3, 2015 4:19 AM

The new favorite pastime here at Boomer Brief HQ is binge-watching. We've discovered and rediscovered so many series and movies through the miracle of Netflix that watching episodic TV seems so...so...2014

Our recent discovery is Mr. Selfridge, a British TV drama about Harry Gordon Selfridge and his department store, Selfridge & Co. The story kicks off in 1908 during a time when women were enjoying an ever-increasing amount of freedom and the world was rapidly changing.

Enter Harry Selfridge (Jeremy Piven) an American determined to change the way Brits - and ultimately the entire world - shop. But there's more to this retail tale than meets the eye. Harry's got a checkered past and more mistresses and misdeeds than even he can keep straight.

Mr Selfridge 1 - 600.jpgPiven's the Energizer Bunny whenever he's on screen. He's a master showman with a flair for over-the-top presentation and his storyline is chock full of drama and sparkling dialog.

But wait, there's more.

The series doesn't entirely focus on the retail savant, there are myriad plots and plot twists involving his family, store staff and competitors (think a less stuffy Downton Abbey).

It all adds up to great fun and a terrific binge-watching experience. If you like period dramas (especially the pre- and post-WWI era) check out Mr. Selfridge.

Seasons 1-3 are out now (Hulu, iTunes, Netflix, etc.) and Season 4 will air later this year on your local PBS station.

Playing Favorites is a column where Charlotte and I pull back the curtain on our Boomer lives to show you what we're into these days. It may be a movie we've discovered. A new restaurant. Great food. Interesting drink. A song we can't get out of our heads...it could be anything. It's all about discovery and the stuff that makes us happy. So, step inside our world and let us show you around. Don't mind the dust, the housekeeper comes on Thursday.

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
