Voli Vodka

By Bob on January 26, 2012 6:26 AM

As a lifelong resident of the South, I grew up watching the grownups sip bourbon on the back porch. But, when I reached (legal) drinking age I rejected their caramel-colored concoction and chose vodka as my drink of choice. And never. Looked. Back. BOO YAH.

Now, thanks to Voli Vodka, I have one more reason to love the clear liquid: fewer calories.

A low-calorie vodka? That's just crazy talk.

At least that's what I thought when Voli Spirits asked if I'd like to try their light vodka. I have to admit the idea DID appeal to me.

Since I hit 50 I have the metabolism of the speed bump. That's why a low-cal version of my favorite spirit seemed worth trying.

Voli Light Vodkas have about 25% to 40% FEWER calories than other brands. A 1.5 oz. (pretty much your average jigger) shot of Voli Lemmon vodka comes in at only 78 Calories. These folks had me at Low-Cal, but how would Voli taste?

Let's go to the tape.

Voli Lemmon Vodka

What They Say About It

Voli is handcrafted by the master blenders of Roullet-Fransac in Cognac, France, a 162 years old house of exceptional spirits.

Its light vodkas are a delicate blend of the finest wheat vodka, pure spring water from Protea (Cognac region) and natural flavors. Voli is distilled 5 times and filtered 4 times in order to create clean and smooth tasting vodkas with 25-40% fewer calories.

How I Tested It

Voli provided a bottle of their Lemon Vodka for this test. I put my Voli Lemon in the refrigerator (the label asks you not to freeze it) and left it there overnight, so it'd be good and cold after a hard day in the blogosphere.

What I Like About It

I've had my share of Lemon Drop Martinis and I have to say the Voli version may be the best I've ever tasted. The lemon-infused vodka - served straight up out of the cold, cold bottle, was superb. Clean. Crisp. No annoying aftertaste. The flavored vodka was aromatic without being overpowering. I tasted the delicate texture of the liquor and the light touch of the lemon. In a word: Superb.

What I Ate With It

My Happy Hour snack of semi-soft cheese and multi-grain crackers were a great pairing to the Voli Lemon Vodka.

Would I Drink It Again

I'll put it this way. I've already been to the Voli website and located the nearest store (HINT: It's the Goody Goody Liquor on Colleyville Blvd.). I'll be heading over there to restock my liquor cabinet very soon.

Where Can You Get It

Most liquor stores and fine wine and spirit stores carry the low calorie vodka. It's available in unflavored Lyte, Espresso Vanilla Fusion, Raspberry Coca Fusion, Orange Vanilla Fusion (Creamsicle Martini anyone?) and my favorite, Lemon Flavored Vodka.

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
