2 Travel Apps to Fall in Love With

By Bob on October 4, 2012 5:13 AM

One of the best things about being an Empty-Nester Boomer is not being tied to the school calendar. When our son Cole was in school, we were slaves to the academic schedule. No more!

Fall is our favorite time to head out of town. We especially like going to the beach in the "off season" and this year (fingers crossed) we have a BIG trip planned that I'll bore tell you about later. I'm always on the lookout for apps to make our travels more fun. Today, I've come up with a couple that make sharing your adventures a lot better than boring old cellphone pix. Here are 2 new travel apps we recommend.

PTCH

If you've got a hankering to be the next Frances Ford Coppola, look no further than your iPhone. DreamWorks Animation has launched its first startup: Ptch, an iOS App that lets you make easy multimedia creations using video, photos and music stored on your phone or social media sites like Facebook, Google+, YouTube, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter and Viddy.

The app comes with fonts, graphics, Instagram-like filters and more than 100 hit songs, but can be supplemented with your own tunes. Without the tech-heavy components of editing software, or the learning curve that comes with it, iPhone owners can quickly share a creative video of their grandchild's first steps, or stitch together their favorite Instagram photos of that trip to Vegas.

Ptch reinvents the traditional slideshow, turning boring photos into an experience - one you can easily share with family and friends. And if your friends and family aren't happy with the final product (hey, you know who you are), they're free to "reptch," or reassemble, the original Ptch with their own stuff.

What's It Cost?

Zip. Zero. Nada. It's FREE Boomers!

Where Can I Get It?

You can download it now in the App Store, and it's compatible with an iPhone, iPod touch and iPad running iOS 5 or later.

SEE MAIL

This new iPhone app is the perfect accessory for all travelers, dubbed by the media as the "Next Instagram," SeeMail is a cool app that lets you record and add voice notes to photographs. When taking that perfect photo of a sunset, mountain range, hotel or beach, SeeMail gives you the opportunity to share the story behind the photo.

No other app has ever blended photos, captions, locations and audio like SeeMail. And every SeeMail can be shared to popular social streams like Facebook and Twitter as a way to draw more people into the experience.

What's It Cost?

$0 (that's Free to you and me).

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
