Fridge Finds: 2 Fun-tastic, Zero-Calorie Ways to Boost Water's Flavor

By Charlotte on March 25, 2014 12:33 PM

I know I need to drink water. Besides supporting your immune system, water can help you lose weight, smooth your skin (there's no easier anti-aging treatment!) even encourage your hair to grow faster.

But plain water is so BLAH, I have a hard time drinking as much as I should. That's why I was thrilled to find these two, tasty favorites. They have no calories (priority #1 in my book) and use natural flavors to make drinking water a lot more fun.

Cascade Ice Sparking Water

Anything but boring, Cascade Ice sparking waters combine natural fruit juices with a delightful "fizz" that'll wake up your taste buds. I love the tangy Raspberry Lemonade flavor but with 21 options ranging from Cranberry Pomegranate to Coconut Pineapple, there's plenty of room to experiment.

Cascade Ice comes in 21 flavors and has no calories, sodium, gluten, sugar or caffeine.

I have a weakness for Diet Coke but, with a fun fizz, no calories and all the benefits of water, Cascade Ice makes a healthy alternative. And even better, there's no reason to stop at just one. ($12-$16 for a case of 12, 17.2-ounce bottles at retailers like Albertson's, HEB and Market Street)

Stur Liquid Water Enhancer

Stur 2 366.jpgAnother winning way to perk up water's taste, Stur is an all-natural, fruit-flavored liquid that you mix with tap or your favorite bottled water. Stur has no calories or sugar. It's made with 100% vitamin C and stevia, a no-calorie, plant-based sweetener that's said to be healthier than artificial sweeteners.

I'm hooked on the light, fruity Truely Pomegranite Cranberry flavor because adding one squeeze to eight ounces water takes you into much more interesting territory. Other choices include Honestly Lemonade, Purely Orange Mango, Simply Strawberry, Freshly Fruit Punch, Proudly Tea + Lemon and unsweetened Only Mint Cucumber.

As a bonus, this affordable water pick-me-up goes a long way. Five bottles make 90, 8-ounce drinks. And trying it is a no-brainer because Stur comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee - love Stur or your money back. ($19.95 for 5, 1.4-ounce bottles at Sturdrinks.com)

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
