In the Mirror: Aveeno Positively Ageless

By Charlotte on February 9, 2014 1:44 AM

In January, I hosted a simple dinner for the lovely ladies in my Bunco group. The 12 of us have been meeting monthly for about 20 years. In the beginning, we played the dice game that brought us together religiously. These days, there's really no time for that because we're busy discussing the joys (our children and grandchildren), challenges (divorce and health scares) ... every detail of our lives.

Since we're Boomer Babes over 50, the conversation inevitably rolls around to nasty ole'.Father Time and how to outsmart him. What's the best way to burn calories at our age? What's really involved in an eyelid lift and will insurance kick in? And what can you do about wrinkles and overall uncooperative skin?

So naturally, we were all thrilled when the folks at Aveeno sent samples from their Positively Ageless line to help answer that last question. These botanical-based products are made with good-for-you ingredients like shitake mushrooms that give older skin a boost.

What the Experts Say

Rich in vitamins and amino acids, shiitake mushrooms have been used in Asia for centuries to increase energy and promote overall vitality. Aveeno's Positively Ageless collection uses the shiitake mushroom's beauty-enhancing benefits to improve skin's appearance and help it look younger.

Positively Ageless Reconditioning Cream in pack 259.jpgWhat I Tested

I tried Aveeno's Positively Ageless Reconditioning Night Cream and Firming Body Lotion.

Aveeno Positively Ageless Reconditioning Night Cream works while you sleep to help correct signs of aging.

What I like

Made with Aveeno's antioxidant Natural Shitake Complex and smoothing emollients, this skin-nourishing pair is a real treat for Boomer skin.

The Reconditioning Night Cream works while you sleep to help correct signs of sun damage. It targets fine lines around your eyes and forehead, uneven tone, dullness and brown spots.

I enjoy rubbiAVEENO Positively Ageless Firming Body Lotion 259.jpgng it on my face and neck at night after cleansing. Although deeply moisturizing, it soaks in quickly and leaves no greasy feeling. That means there's no chance I'll scare Bob or mess up my beautiful, red silk pillowcase (another part of my anti-wrinkle strategy).

Also intensely hydrating, the Firming Body Lotion locks in moisture so your skin feels soft and smooth all day long. While soothing dryness, this advanced formula goes to work improving skin texture, adding elasticity and helping everything look tighter. And you don't even have to exercise!

Using the lotion in the morning after showering is a delight, especially this time of year when my skin is super dry and scaly. Like the night cream, it absorbs quickly so I can slip into my robe afterwards without hesitation. Plus, the nice, light fragrance doesn't linger or interfere with my cologne.

Both these affordable, drugstore buys have been clinically shown to provide visible improvements in as little as two weeks. That makes me think I'm on the right track because it's only been a week but my skin already seems healthier.

Prepare your own Mexican quick fix with this Chipotle-inspired bowl. Carbs are moderated by filling the bowl with beans, extra veggies and chicken. No need for rice, since the beans count as carbs.

Tips:

If you love tomatoes, increase the quantity to 1/2 cup, but note that the carbohydrates will also increase.

If preparing this recipe for one person, cut all of the ingredients in half. Or simply prepare the full recipe up to the end of step 2 and store leftover chicken and vegetable-bean mixture in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 minutes, or until heated through, and continue with step 3.

Health Bite: The iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc in black beans help to keep bones strong and healthy.
